About the City



Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, lies in the hinterland of the Chengdu Plain, in central Sichuan. It is one of the most important economic centers and transportation and communication hubs in Southwestern China. By the end of 2021, Chengdu has a jurisdiction of 12 districts, 3 counties and 5 county-level cities under its jurisdiction, with a total area of 14,335 square kilometers and with the permanent resident population of 21,192,000. 

Based on archaeologically unearthed relics and other ancient documents, scholars have confirmed that the roots of Chengdu’s civilization can be traced back over 4,500 years, the location of the city has remained unchanged for more than 3,000 years and it has been recognized as a city for around 2,300 years. In the Han Dynasty, Chengdu was one of the five largest commercial cities in the whole country. In the Tang and Song dynasties the city was known as “Yi Zhou (Chengdu) Second Only to the City of Yang Zhou,” and “the First Famous City in China.” In the Han and Tang dynasties Chengdu remained as one of the top cities in the whole country. 

Chengdu is the homeland of the giant panda, which is reputed as a living fossil and a national treasure. It is also the original place of ancient Shu’s culture. Jinsha Ruins and Sanxingdui Site are demonstrating the mystery, glory and charm of ancient Shu’s culture. The food in Chengdu is one of China’s four most famous food styles known as Chuan style food, it is well-known for its delicious spiciness. The pace of life in Chengdu is slower than in other big cities. People tend to spend more time and efforts to create and experience happiness. It says Chengdu is a city where one comes and doesn’t want to leave.
